Sundays at The Center launches

September 20, 2009, was an eventful day! Several of us came together for our first meeting and celebration as “Sundays at The Center” in Colorado Springs. We are celebrating both our humanity and our spirituality. We are creating a “church” for people who don’t go to church. We are creating a community for those people who, when faced with making a choice of “religion” on a form, check “other” or “spiritual” rather than a specific religion.

I just finished reading Dan Brown’s latest: The Lost Symbol.  There are many quotable passages in this book, some of which Brown lifted from notable people. One of my favorites:

“That which is impenetrable to us really exists. Behind the secrets of nature remains something subtle, intangible, and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything that we can comprehend is my religion.” –Albert Einstein

And, further:

“The religion of the future, Einstein had predicted, will be a cosmic religion. It will transcend personal God and avoid dogma and theology.” –Dan Brown quoting Einstein

This is precisely what Sundays at The Center is aiming for. We are post-denominational, post-doctrinal and certainly non-dogmatic. We speak of God in many, many forms as “something subtle, intangible, and inexplicable.” We don’t put him in a box; we don’t put her on a pedestal; we venerate “this force beyond anything that we can comprehend.” And we embrace this force as not only something out there beyond us, beyond reach, but also something very near, very deep, inside of us.
